Health Benefits of Rosemary Essential Oil

Rosemary oil is a prominent essential oil that works well to improve your overall health. Most people are familiar with rosemary as an herb and spice where it is used primarily to add flavor to food. The leaf and oil are used extensively in foods. However, it has become increasingly popular over the years as more of its health benefits are understood, including its ability to stimulate hair growth, boost mental activity, relieve respiratory problems, and reduce pain. Other less popular uses range from treating digestive problems (heartburn, flatulence) to liver, and gallbladder problems, as well as loss of appetite. Rosemary oil can be used to treat gout, excessive coughing, headaches, high blood pressure, and reducing age-related memory loss.

As a topical application (applied to the skin), the numerous qualities of rosemary are well documented. Rosemary oil is effective in relieving pain, treating headaches, muscle pain, rheumatism, and even arthritis. Apply rosemary to your body by massaging the affected area. Vapor baths with rosemary qualities, making it great for relieving the pain from sprains and joints aches. Additionally, the oil is known to stimulate blood circulation which can relieve pain and aid in coagulation of wounds for faster healing and recovery. With regular massages, the oil helps in toning your skin and removing dryness. It can also give your skin a healthy, even glow when regularly applied, or when its a main component of your moisturizers and body creams.



Rosemary has a vitalizing aroma which makes it an excellent inhalant and useful ingredient in aromatherapy. The oil is used in air fresheners, cosmetics, beauty aids, bath oil, candles and perfumes because of its unique and intoxicating aroma. When the aroma of the oil is inhaled, it can boost your mental energy and clear your respiratory tract. Many people spray a mixture of rosemary oil and water to remove bad odors from rooms, furniture, and bedding. The oil blends well with other essential oils such as frankincense, lavender, clary sage, cedar wood, basil, thyme, citronella, lemongrass, elemi, geranium, chamomile, peppermint and cardamom.

Boost Mental Activity


Rosemary essential oil is an excellent brain and nerve tonic. The pleasant aroma stimulates mental activity, and is therefore used by college students during exam times because it increases concentration and helps individuals study more efficiently. Because rosemary oil stimulates mental activity, it is also a good remedy for depression, mental fatigue and forgetfulness. Whenever your brain is tired, try inhaling a little rosemary oil to revitalize your mental energy.

Respiratory Problems

The scent of the rosemary has been shown to give relief from throat congestion, and is also used in the treatment of respiratory allergies, colds, sore throats and the flu. Because rosemary also has germ killing qualities, it is also effective for curing respiratory infections. The oil is antispasmodic, therefore, used in some treatment programs for bronchial asthma.

Treating Baldness

Rosemary is widely used in shampoos and lotions. Regular use of rosemary oil (rubbing it on your scalp) works to stimulate the skin and increase blood flow. This process helps to stimulate hair follicles, making your hair grow longer and stronger. It is also believed that rosemary oil slows down premature hair loss and graying. Therefore, it is an excellent tonic for those who are beginning to show signs of male pattern baldness.
